ISG Motionless Mixer

How it Works

Benefits of Choosing a ROSS ISG Static Mixer

What does a ROSS ISG Static Mixer do?

The ISG (Interfacial Surface Generator) Static Mixer is ideal for blending materials with large viscosity ratios, as high as 250,000:1 or more. This design features four holes bored at oblique angles through each ISG element. When two input streams enter an ISG mixer, the number of layers emerging from the first, second and third elements are 8, 32, and 128. This exponential progression generates over two million layers through just ten elements, assuring product homogeneity.

How does a ROSS ISG Static Mixer work?

The ISG consists of individual mixing elements that are stacked in a tubular housing. The ends of the elements are shaped so that adjacent elements form a tetrahedral chamber. Four holes bored through each element provide the flow paths. The holes are at oblique angles so that material near the periphery (i.e. near the pipe wall) on the inlet side of the element emerges near the center on the outlet side. The materials from each of the four holes recombine in the tetrahedral chamber only to be split again in the preceding element. Product in the center will exit near the wall. This radial mixing eliminates the wall smearing effect that can be otherwise encountered when mixing viscous materials.

Technical Data

Ross LPD/LLPD (low pressure drop) and ISG (interfacial surface generator) Motionless Mixers are well known for their wide ranging uses in turbulent and laminar flow mixing applications. Each design can be supplied as complete plug-in modules or as individual elements for installation into your preferred housing design.

      • Improve your extrusion process with a static mixer

Interfacial Surface Generator (ISG) Static Mixers are particularly ideal for use in injection molding and extrusion applications. Benefits include uniform temperature and viscosity, accurate composition and highly repeatable quality of the finished product.

      • Choosing the right static mixer design for viscous mixtures

Static mixer designs vary widely and proper selection is key to achieving a homogenous mix within the allowed pressure drop or available pipe length. For viscous applications with space limitations but no maximum pressure drop, an Interfacial Surface Generator static mixer is recommended.
