Double Planetary Mixer

How the Double Planetary Mixer Works

The Double Planetary Mixer includes two blades that rotate on their own axes, while they orbit the mix vessel on a common axis. The blades continuously advance along the periphery of the vessel, removing material from the vessel wall and transporting it to the interior. After one revolution the blades have passed through the entire vessel, after three revolutions most materials have been mixed and after only 36 revolutions, the blades have contacted virtually the entire batch.

Ross pioneered Change Can mixer design nearly 100 years ago. Today we offer many of our mixers including our PowerMix with this option, which can dramatically increase production in your plant. While one vessel is wheeled away for remote discharge and cleaning, another wheels into place to start the next batch immediately.

Ross Planetary Mixers have been the world's leader for the last 50 years. Today it still surpasses all others in both productivity and long-term reliability. With no packing glands or bearings in the product zone, contamination is virtually eliminated.

HV Blade design shown in animation is patented.

This mixer is ideal for mixing and kneading viscous pastes or putty-like materials. Capacities from 1/2-pint through 400 gallons. A wide variety of options include vacuum/pressure, thermal jacketing and sanitary designs.

Laboratory Specifications (open full size view)

  • The proven choice for many low to high viscosity applications. These blades knead and are suitable for wet or dry blending, regardless of the product's flow characteristics.
  • The new (patent applied for) "HV" high viscosity mixing blades are ideal for ultra-high viscosity applications. The design promotes top to bottom mixing of ingredients and eliminates the "balling up" of materials being mixed.
  • The finger blades are preferred for applications that require the mixing of delicate solids and fibers. These blades can be fine tuned to maximize axial flow within the mix zone.
  • Combination light and sight ports are available for convenient viewing of the batch while the mixer is closed and operating.
  • Two 3" sight and charge ports are normally included on all of our planetary mixers. This enables viewing through one port while charging minor ingredients through the second.
  • Interior and exterior surfaces of the mixer can be polished to assist in thorough cleaning between batches. Our standard finish is 80 grit, however we can provide up to mirror finishes if needed.
  • The wetted surfaces of the mixer which include the blades and mix can interior are often coated for abrasion or chemical resistance purposes.
  • Flush type thermocouples are available for mounting through the side wall of the mix can. The thermocouple enables monitoring of the batch temperature during the mix cycle.
  • Teflon scrapers are available to scrape the walls and bottom of the vessel. Scrapers enhance the heat transfer efficiency of the jacket.
  • Flush type ball valves are supplied for mounting in the bottom of the mix can. The valve is nearly flush with the wall of the mix can.
  • Cove type plug valves are supplied for mouning in the bottom side of the mix can wall. This valve enables connection to cartridge or small container filling operations.
  • Custom designed control panels are built to meet the speciic needs of each individual client. Panels normally include speed, amperage, temperature readouts and timers. Full PLC contol is available.
  • All of our mixers are available in special sanitary designs

  • Sight and charge ports are available in many sizes for attachment to the vacuum hood assembly. These ports enable an operator to conveniently add materials and observe the mixture during the mixing cycle.
  • Two 3" sight and charge ports are normally included on all of our planetary mixers. This enables viewing through one port while charging minor ingredients through the second.
  • Combination light and sight ports are available for convenient viewing of the batch while the mixer is closed and operating.
  • The wetted surfaces of the mixer which include the blades and mix can interior are often coated for abrasion or chemical resistance purposes.
  • This probe rotates with the planetary gearbox and senses the temperature of the product throughout the mix. This design assures a sampling of product throughout the mix can.

  • The Double Planetary is adaptable to special needs such as for use with standard 55 gallon drums.
  • Reverse lift designs are available to raise the mix can to a fixed mixing position. This feature permits fixed attachment of charging connections to the hood and discharge while elevated to receiving containers.
  • The planetary gearbox is available in stainless steel. This can be fabricated in type 304 or 316 stainless and can be polished for sanitary purposes.
  • The dust shield is mounted under the gearbox and shields the mix zone from the gearbox. This assists in cleaning between batches.
  • Single point lubrication manifolds are available for our Planetary Mixers. This enables the rapid lubrication of the entire gearbox from an access port in the side of the hood.
  • Torque measurement is a useful device to measure the end point of viscous mixture.
  • Condensors can be added to a mixer to collect solvents that accumulate from heating and vacuum cycles.
