ROSS Mixers in Aerospace Manufacturing Precision, Performance, and Compliance

Abstract

Aerospace manufacturing relies on advanced materials that present significant mixing challenges, including high viscosity formulations, shear sensitivity, and tightly controlled, reportable conditions. The precision and repeatability of the mixing operation directly influence product performance and safety. This paper reviews mixing technologies used in aerospace applications and outlines key considerations for equipment selection and customization, based on ROSS’s extensive experience in developing specialty mixing systems for high-performance formulations.

Introduction

The aerospace industry presents some of the most demanding mixing challenges in modern manufacturing. Structural adhesives, epoxy compounds, carbon fiber reinforced resins, silicone sealants, thermal interface materials, syntactic foams, and propellant formulations are engineered to meet extreme performance requirements under harsh operating conditions.

These products often vary in viscosity, can be shear and temperature-sensitive, and are usually limited to a narrow processing window that requires tight control over mixing parameters at every stage of production.

The need for lighter, stronger, and more heat-resistant aircraft components has driven the development of advanced aircraft. The quality of the finished material is directly related to the mixing operation. Inadequate dispersion, trapped air, inconsistent shear, or poor temperature control can compromise end-product performance in a sector with zero margin for error.

Aerospace manufacturers are also operating under demanding quality and compliance requirements. Standards such as AS9100 and process certifications under NADCAP require well-documented, validated, traceable, and repeatable manufacturing procedures.

For decades, ROSS has worked closely with suppliers and manufacturers of aircraft parts, missiles, engines, space vehicles and propulsion units to address these challenges. From double planetary mixers engineered for high viscosity compounds, to ultra-high shear mixers used for fine emulsification and advanced control systems that support process validation and batch repeatability – ROSS offers well-proven mixing solutions for a wide range of applications in the highly-competitive aerospace industry.
